What to Expect at Your First Dermatology Consultation

2026-09-15 · 5 min read

Walking into a first dermatology consultation can feel uncertain, particularly if you are not sure what to say. The reassuring part is that it is mainly a conversation. The purpose is for your clinician to understand your skin and goals, and for you to understand your options.

Before you arrive

It helps to think about what bothers you most, how long it has been present and what you have tried already. Bring a list of current skincare products, medicines and supplements, and mention any allergies or past reactions. If you have photographs of how your skin looked previously, these can be useful context.

During the appointment

Your clinician will usually ask about your medical history, lifestyle, sun exposure and skin routine. They will examine the skin, sometimes with a closer look at specific areas, and may ask about previous treatments. You will have time to explain what you would like to change and what you would prefer to leave as it is.

Following the assessment, options are discussed in plain terms, including how each works, expected downtime, risks, alternatives and who it may not suit. It is reasonable to ask about the number of sessions and about costs, which at Fiore Medical Centre are confirmed during the consultation.

After the consultation

You do not have to decide on the spot. Some people book treatment straight away, while others go home to think. If a plan goes ahead, you should receive clear aftercare guidance and know how to contact the clinic if you have questions. In JLT, our daily hours of 10am to 10pm mean there is usually a convenient slot, and results vary from person to person.
