Acne Scars: An Overview of Treatment Options

2026-09-15 · 5 min read

Acne can leave marks and scars that persist long after breakouts have settled. Because scars differ in type, depth and colour, there is no single approach that suits everyone. This overview explains the main categories and the options clinicians commonly discuss.

Understanding scar types

Atrophic scars are indentations in the skin, and are often described as icepick, boxcar or rolling. Raised scars, such as hypertrophic or keloid scars, are less common on the face. Separate from scars, post-inflammatory pigmentation appears as flat dark or red marks that can fade over time. Telling these apart matters, because treatments differ.

Approaches clinicians may discuss

Chemical peels can help with surface texture and some pigmentation. Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries that may support skin renewal and may be used for certain indented scars. Laser and energy-based devices are another option, with different types and settings chosen for the scar and skin tone. Dermal fillers are sometimes considered for selected depressed scars, where lifting from beneath is appropriate.

Often a combination of approaches over several sessions is discussed, and improvement is usually gradual rather than immediate. Results vary, and some scars may only improve partially.

Planning and safety

A consultation is important before starting. Active acne usually needs to be addressed first, and medicines such as isotretinoin may affect the timing of certain procedures. Pregnancy, active infection and a tendency to keloid scarring are among the factors that can change what is suitable. At Fiore Medical Centre in JLT, we assess your skin, explain the options and discuss realistic expectations before agreeing a plan.
